For my Genomics class we were to go out and find an article that discusses the ethics within genome sciences. I am a bit late on this assignment because I was gone when it was due and school started to pile up...all and all oops. Anyways, I found an article called “Dog Cloning Headlines” that talks about how Barbra Streisand cloned two of her dogs and the cloning of dogs in general!
Barbra Streisand spent about $100,000 to $200,000 to clone her beloved dog. Ar the Korean lab where this occurs, the process needs operating on the surrogate mother and egg donor (so two dogs that are rented from a lab-animal provider). In this case, this is all we know because it is unclear what happens after those dogs are no longer needed at Sooam Biotech. The company has told the media that the cloning process only works 33 to 40 percent of the time which means there a high chance of miscarriage. It is so wild to think that people are trying to clone their past dogs because some clones can come out with some “problems”. For example in one instance a clone was supposed to come out white, but it came out with greenish-yellow fur, another had “skeletal malformations” and once a clone of a male was born a female! Most pets that are cloned have different personalities and can sometimes even look a little different from the original “copy”. This leads me to wonder why Barbra Streisand would spend so much money to clone her dog TWICE? I wonder because she even says they have different personalities which mean they are different dogs. Also in further research according to multiple resources like National Geographic, clone animals have the same genes as their donor but there might be slight variation in how these genes are expressed, like markings or eye color could differ from the original animal and the cloned. Another question I have is where do we draw the line with cloning? How do we know people won’t clone deceased relatives? Another question I have is how can we, as a society, protect animals that are being cloned by their owners? How do we show people the value of these animals lives? https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2018/02/barbra-streisand-clone-pet-dogs-explained-spd/ : Gibbens, Sarah. “We Can Clone Pet Dogs-But Is That a Good Idea?” National Geographic, National Geographic Society, 28 Feb. 2018, news.nationalgeographic.com/2018/02/barbra-streisand-clone-pet-dogs-explained-spd/. https://www.geneticsandsociety.org/biopolitical-times/dog-cloning-headlines-again : Shanks, Pete. “Dog Cloning Headlines - Again.” Dog Cloning Headlines - Again |
