The ethics questions posed in the Stand and Be Counted activity were really difficult, provocative questions to think about especially for high school students. At first I was shocked and confused about what are my own personal ethics and morals are, but after figuring that out, the questions became more interesting to think about and more powerful. I think acceptable use of DNA technology is IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) because it gives the opportunity for people to have children. Some applications of DNA technology that I am uncertain about are if I were to use a reproductive technology like IVF to screen for known genetic disease before choosing which embryos to implant for a pregnancy or editing the genome of my child (in the embryonic stage) to avoid known disorder because I don’t know how I feel about that ethically since it makes me feel as if I would be playing God too much, but I would want the best for my future child. It also makes me uncomfortable to think that humankind has the power and technology to pick the best child and I don’t know if that is the most ethical thing. Some lines that I would never cross would be editing the genome of my child (in the embryonic stage) to give them an advantage like making them stronger, taller, faster, or smarter because that would be crossing the line into playing God and I know for sure that that goes against my ethics and morals. Some questions that I would like to investigate are:
